The Book Waitress: Serving Up Evil Blog Tour stop!

Today marks the first day of The Book Waitress Blog Tour! I hope everyone has as much fun participating as we did putting it together. A big thank you to Shelley and Kathryn of TSK TSK What To Read for co-hosting this tour with me! I couldn't have done it without y'all!

Some of you might not know, but it was Deena's first book, Trinity, that kick started my reviewing career. If not for Deena, I wouldn't be where I am today. So, I'd like to say thank you. Thank you, Deena, for all you have done for me. You've given me so much, it's time I gave something back to you. Congratulations on the release of The Book Waitress. Interview:
What inspired you to write The Book Waitress? 

I used to call myself a book waitress when I worked in my college's library. Partner that up with my love of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and an idea formed.

How long did it take you to write it? 

It took a few weeks to write the first draft.

Who is your favorite character? 

I think my favorite character is Camille Dutton. She has the quirkiness of Temperance Brennan, from  Bones, and the snarky sense of humor I love.

Are any of the characters based on people you know? 

Yes, Nancy is based on a library supervisor I once had the distinct pleasure of meeting. 

Describe the book in 3 words? 

I need 4! Dark intense romantic adventure

Did you listen to any music while writing TBW? 

Yes, I actually did, which is unusual for me. I listened at times to Gregorian chants, instrumental rock, Celtic thunder, hard rock, and good old white noise.

What can fans expect for the next books in the series? 

Oh, the next book is so intense! Take a good deep breathe before diving down into the darkness to read it! *smacks hands together and grins wickedly*

Excerpt:

“Coming! I’ll be right with you!” Camille dashed over to her circulation desk to find a tall, blonde-haired man in loose-fitting jeans and a plaid shirt standing there with slips of paper in his hand, a beat up backpack slung over one shoulder.

He turned and their eyes locked as she scurried around the desk and pasted on a professional smile. Thank goodness she’d been rushing about. It masked the true reason for her breathlessness- his heart-stopping, blue-green eyes. “How can I help you, today, sir?”

“I’d like to take these out, please, but I don’t know where to find them.” He flashed a pearly white grin. “I’m hoping you can help me.”

“Sure.” Looking at his order slips, she noticed they were all for newspapers. They were kept in a different place from the journals. She looked on the floor plan taped to the desk and located their home. “Follow me, please.”

She joined him around the front of the circulation desk and walked to the far end of the room. Archived newspapers were in a small room off the main area. His slips listed local and national newspapers for June of the last six years.

“I’m usually self-sufficient in a library, but I’m new to the island and this place is quite different from the ones I’ve been to. So thanks for helping me.”

“No problem. I’m new here, too, actually. Just arrived about an hour ago, in fact.”

“And you’re on the job already? Wow. That’s what I call dedication.”

“Here we are, sir.” She opened the door and ushered him inside. “Newspapers are organized by name, alphabetically, then by year, month, and day. They cannot be signed out, and I believe they must remain in this room.”

“Please, call me Derek. You’ll be seeing me here a lot from now on doing research, so it’s only right.”

“Okay, Derek. Please keep all food and drink out of the vicinity of the reference materials.”

“Yes, ma’am or…” He stood there, waiting. For what, she didn’t know.

“Or what?”

“Or maybe you could tell me your name so I don’t offend you by using that old lady term again.”

“Ah, well, uh, my name is Camille. It just so happens the term ma’am, originally used in the 1660’s, is really a sign of respect when addressing a lady who is married. So it makes sense not to use that term for me since I am not a married woman. If you need anything further, I’m at the circulation desk. Good luck with your research.” She stepped toward the door.

“I learn something new everyday, Camille. Thank you. It’s important work I’m doing here, you know.”

“I’m sure it is. I’m just gonna head out now. New ‘round here. ‘Gotta learn the ropes.” She backed out of the room and closed the door, hurrying back to her desk where she touched her hands to her cheeks. A full-on flush had erupted on her face and neck. She could tell just by looking at her reflection in her computer screen.

My Review:

My problem with most books is that they start off too slow. That is not the case with Awaited. This book starts off with a pretty big bang, literally. From the very beginning and through the whole novel, the story is fast paced and like a roller coaster ride. There's a lot going on- in a good way. It was super hard to put the book down, even for a moment. It's one of those books that you basically read the whole way through because you can't possibly stop and not know what happens next. I feel that Lynn's writing really strengthened in this book. There's not one single thing I didn't love about it. In fact, I almost feel like rereading it already- that's just how much I loved it!

I have to applaud Lynn Rush. The chemistry between Belle and Russell was MAGNIFICENT! I've never "Awwww"ed so much over two characters. One of the best things about their relationship is how special it is. Not only in the paranormal way, but in the way they communicate. Russell is so tender and sweet. (Where can I get me one of those?) I love how Belle alternates between a vulnerable and strong female character. It was great seeing her development throughout the story.  I felt a lot more connected to these two characters, than I did Beka and David, although I was happy when they made tiny appearances in Awaited. And Jessica, too! We also meet new characters, Rain in particular, who I hope is in book 3 because I really liked her.

Like book 1, Awaited has a lot of Paranormal aspects within. This story was very interesting. The plot was very entertaining and exciting, as well as unique.

Anxiously awaiting book 3! Awaited ended in the perfect way to set up for the next novel!

I recommend this book to any paranormal lover that enjoys an action and romance filled tale with a unique twist!

Dark Angel's Ward by Nia Shay Review!

Synopsis:

Fighting for her life isn’t so easy when Jandra’s also fighting her heart. Her her inexorable attraction to Zeph may save them...or may damn them both.

My Review:

It's amazing books like this that remind me why Paranormal Romance is my favorite genre. Dark Angel's Ward is a delightful, well written story that is absolutely gripping. Nia Shay is now a must have on my shelf- or E-reader, in this case. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and wished that I hadn't zoomed through it. It is an addicting book though; it's not one you'll be able to put down!

Dark Angel's Ward is a unique tale that is both interesting and entertaining. The plot focuses heavily on paranormal aspects- Angels, Nephilim, Demons, and Wards, complete with a secret society- and stands out among other angel stories. A lot of action takes place during the novel (don't worry, there's romance too!), so it feels more like a movie than a book. The book is suspenseful and keeps you on the edge of your seat.

Each of the characters are fascinating and have the reader experiencing some strong emotion. I'd love to read more about them all. Of course, the two best characters are the two main ones. We have Jandra, or Jade, who is badass, intelligent, and strong. She's delightfully sassy and funny, making her the ideal female character. She's the female lead that most of us crave in a good story. Then we have Zeph, oh Zeph, "Mr. Hottie McHot Pants" himself. He's the tortured hero that every reader will fall in love with. The pair have explosive chemistry and have some rather steamy moments.

It's impossible not to fall in love with this story. I can't wait to read more by Nia. I highly recommend this book to any PNR lover that is looking for the next best thing!

My Review:

Highlander's Bride is the first book I've read from Deborah, and she is a wonderful story teller. Her descriptions are vivid. The dialogue is incredible. It's easy to see that that aspect alone took a lot of time and effort, giving the book a feel that is both authentic and genuine. Plus, there is a glossary in the back of the book for words you may not know! That said, most of the stuff is easy to translate. By the end of the story I felt like talking like a Scott and visiting the beautiful place that is Scotland!

Another great addition to the story was the French addition. I felt that along with the amazing Scottish dialogue, the bits of French here and there really strengthened the story and made it even more enjoyable.

The story is a fast and enjoyable read filled with romance, action, and lots of drama. There is never a dull moment throughout the tale. The characters are both interesting and aggravating at times. The reason for four stars instead of five is that I felt like there was just a little too much back and forth between them. Despite that, I think the two main characters still had great chemistry together during the romantic moments of the novel.

Highlander's Bride has a wonderfully sweet ending that had me smiling. I just love a happy ending. Once the tale was over I realized I'd really miss Alexander and Kathrine. As with every good story, I wish there was more, but maybe there will be a sequel at some point in time. Along with liking the main characters, I found several of the minor characters very likable as well. William, Alexander's younger brother, and Monique, Katherine's mother being two I especially loved.

I look forward to reading more from Mrs. Gafford. I thoroughly enjoyed her take on a Scottish romance. :)
