Tell my fans a little bit about yourself and your books.
My name is Jess and I am a Texan, that means I have all of the traditional Texan qualities: pride, obnoxious stubbornness, delusional principles like honor and chivalry, and a hunger for meat off the bone.
How would you introduce your books to someone that has yet to read them?
I am adding a masculine, pragmatic, exact diction to the romance genre, and trying desperately to fill the shoes left by my big sister and her tremendous impact on the community.
What inspired you to start writing? What age did you start?
I started in Elementary School. I loved stories. I always have. I loved hearing stories and telling stories. My motivation for behavior was what might be a good story to tell after the fact.
What do you enjoy doing when you’re not writing?
I enjoy doing a lot of things. I work out twice a day. I read voraciously. I watch every movie that I can get a hold of. I enjoy the occasional video game, although I don’t play as often as I used to. I try to have as many deep, philosophical conversations with as many people as possible, in order to learn and get a little piece of their person and wisdom and add it to my own. And, of course, I love girls.
What advice would you give to an aspiring author?
Search for the story around you. Live one you’d like to hear. Outline. Outline. Outline. Compartmentalize your time to give yourself an opportunity to write.
What’s your favorite scene/line from your works?
My favorite scenes are the ones in which Blaine and David have their conversations. Those two are both based on aspects of myself. When they communicate, with their bantering and bickering, it is almost identical to my inner monologue bouncing backward and forward. There is a hopefulness and a drive to analyze within me, and sometimes they have massively contradictory opinions. The argument is never antagonistic, but it can be pretty explosive.
What's the hardest thing about writing? The easiest?
The hardest thing about writing is knowing what to write. That’s why I preach the wonders of outlining. The easiest thing is definitely letting the ideas come. Inspiration is not an active pastime. You either have it, or you don’t.
What are you currently reading?
I am currently re-reading “Thus Spoke Zarathustra” by Friedrich Nietzsche. It gives me a little dose of the sublime in the mornings before I start my day.
What are you currently working on?
I am currently working on the sequel to “For A Hero.” There will be a lot of questions about David and Blaine answered. There will be a lot more action, detail, depth and conflict. There will still be romance. Families will be made and broken. Look out for it.
What books did you read as a child?
I was a big fan of Winnie The Pooh. He was the bomb. I loved Fleming’s Bond books, Doyle’s Holmes books, and all the comics I could get my hands on. Superman and Batman were obviously my favorites.
How has your life changed since you began writing?
It hasn’t. I’m still chasing dreams, money and women all over Texas. I have a feeling that once I start touring and doing conventions, that the effect of this is going to start to sink in. Sable has always been a writer. It’s been part of my life for a long time. So now that my books are one of the ones we push, it doesn’t feel too different.
Do you listen to music while you write?
I don’t listen to music. I would uncontrollably sing if I did. I listen to binaural frequencies that promote creativity on some noise-canceling headphones.
Out of all of your characters, who is your favorite?
David and Blaine are both characters that are part of me. They are each based on ancient archetypes and feelings, thoughts, motivations that I have developed in myself since I was a child.
What do you want readers to take away from your books?
It’s all about the feeling. I am trying to put a certain feeling in the books. Everything that happens in mine or Sable’s books is designed to make the reader feel something intense, or delicate, or joyous, or longing, or despair, or just something. When a reader tells me that they felt ANYTHING after reading my book, I feel very proud.
You’re stranded on a desert island. What books do you take with you?
As many as I can. The Iliad is a must. Beowulf, Ulysses, Casino Royale, The Modern Prometheus, The Count of Monte Cristo, Moby Dick, and Dracula, if I had to pick a few.
What book(s) do you wish you would have written?
I wish I would have written the top ten on the New York Times Bestseller list so that I could be collecting royalties.
Do you have any interesting dreams or goals?
One of the most reoccurring dreams in my life is my desire to appear on a talk show. I can’t really explain why I want that so badly, but it is a serious fantasy. I want to dress up in a tailored Italian suit with a vest and be introduced in front of a live audience. I want to make an appearance while Mark Whalberg and Scarlett Johansson are also guests on the show. Mark will realize I was the best friend he always wished he had. Scarlett will confess her undying love at first glance. I will shake Craig Ferguson (or Jimmy Kimmel or whoever)’s hand and talk about my books (or whatever else I’m famous for at that point.)
