Lexine hooked her arm around Jett’s as they
headed out of the town hall that afternoon, surprised by the sudden tension in
his body. “Is something wrong?”
“I have to meet Lark at sundown. After today,
the intensity of my training is going to increase. I won’t be able to see you
for a while.”
“A while?”
“A month, and then I’ll only get a day. They
made it clear they’d be testing all of my physical and mental limits.”
“I understand,” she said solemnly, doing her
best to hide her disappointment. She’d known this was coming, had witnessed the
training of a Guardian before. Course, he’d be facing even bigger challenges to
earn the position as Lark’s partner. She squeezed his arm. “Good luck. You were
meant for this.”
He gave her a haunted look. “In his journals, my
father predicted it.”
“I’m not surprised.” She watched him in her
peripheral vision. “Anything special you want to do in your few remaining hours
of freedom today?”
“I can think of several things.” The smile he
gave her radiated mischief. He sobered. “But, most of all, I want to do
something normal.”
“Normal?”
“Normal.” He pointed out a small group of demon
teens who’d braved the sunny day to pass some time at the basketball hoop.
“I’ve never had normal. If I was just an average male in the colony passing an
typical afternoon with his date, what would we do?”
“Well, basketball isn’t my thing. Hmm.” She did
a quick mental inventory of her new apartment and smiled. “I have the perfect
idea.”
When they reached the orchard and climbed the
stairs to her studio, Lexine directed Jett to sit on the futon she’d shoved
against the wall. She turned to the oak trunk her parents had given her, filled
with little gifts for her new space.
“My brother and I had a good collection in our
old apartment. Our choices are limited now, but I think you’ll like this one.”
She held up a DVD from the small pile her mother had wrapped with a bow.
“Human television?”
“Human or not, Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker are
awesome.”
He laughed. Such a rare thing. Lexine paused,
absorbing the weight of that gift.
She set up the tiny—but heavy—TV on top of the
trunk and started Rush Hour in the
attached player. She settled next to Jett on the futon with a bag of un-popped,
plain popcorn. Her favorite. Holding the bag, she ignited demon fire on her
palms and mentally focused the heat. The corn popped.
“Now, that’s a neat trick I’ve never thought
of,” Jett said.
She opened the bag and kissed his cheek.
“Popcorn and a movie. As normal as it gets.”

Everything written by Sarah is absolute perfection. It's everything you could ever want in a story, written in a way that will make your breath catch and your heart soar. I always find it hard to write reviews for her books because they are just so magical and when you love a book so much, it's hard to put that into words in a way that adequately gets your feelings across.
Deep in Crimson is just as amazing as Out in Blue was, not that I should have expected anything different. Sarah's writing flows beautifully, flawlessly, and effortlessly. The story is captivating, drawing readers in with a mixture of adventure and romance. As the world of Sanctuary grows, I fall in love with the story and it's characters even more.
Jett is a great Hero. It was fascinating to watch his progress through the story- watching him learning how to rejoin society and learning how to be affectionate. He is also quite the badass. Helping to guard the Archangels was a brilliant spot for Jett. Him and Lex are adorable together. I really liked that Lexine was different from all the other demons in Sanctuary. Jett and Lex are perfect for each other and their story is incredibly sweet.
And can I just say how thrilled I was to see Wren, Ginger, Raphael again and meet the twins... Okay, so I was happy to see everyone, but I was thrilled to see Wren again to the point I wanted to cry. Yes, I might just be obsessed.
Deep in Crimson is a fantastic addition to an already amazing series! I'm desperately hoping Sarah will write a third book because I can't get enough of this world!
