A native of Southern California, Christine Pope has been writing stories ever since she commandeered her family’s Smith-Corona typewriter back in the sixth grade. Her short fiction has appeared in Astonishing Adventures, Luna Station Quarterly, and the journal of dark fiction, Dark Valentine. Two of her short stories have been nominated for the Pushcart Prize.

Christine writes as the mood takes her, and her work includes paranormal romance, and fantasy and science fiction/space opera romance. She blames this on being easily distracted by bright, shiny objects, which could also account for the size of her shoe collection. After spending many years in the magazine publishing industry, she now works as a freelance editor and graphic designer in addition to writing fiction. She fell in love with Sedona, Arizona, while researching the Sedona Trilogy and now makes her home there, surrounded by the red rocks. No alien sightings, though...not yet, anyway!

Tell my fans a little bit about yourself and your books.

My name is Christine Pope, and I write in several different sub-genres of romance, mainly fantasy, science fiction, and paranormal. I have two ongoing series: Tales of the Latter Kingdoms (fantasy romance) and The Gaian Consortium Series (SF romance), in addition to my paranormal trilogies.

What genre have you not yet written, but would like to try?

I haven’t written any “straight” fantasy or science fiction – I write fantasy romance and SF romance – and I’ve wanted to try my hand at it. I suppose the danger is I’d start writing a love story, even if I didn’t set out to!

What inspired you to start writing? What age did you start?

I always read. I actually can’t remember learning to read – it seems as if I just always did it. Reading all those stories and then wanting to make up my own is what got me writing. I was writing little stories when I was as young as seven. I wrote my first full-length (well, it was around 150 pages) novel when I was eleven. 

What advice would you give to an aspiring author?

Just keep writing and honing your craft. Almost no one’s first novel is really publishable (there’s a reason why they’re called “trunk novels”). Now is such an exciting time to be a writer because you don’t have go through the often soul-crushing process of querying and getting rejections – you can put your works right out in the world and let the readers decide. That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t work very hard at putting the best book possible out there, but it does mean you don’t have to worry about an otherwise excellent work being rejected simply because someone at a big publisher couldn’t figure out how to market it.

What are you currently working on?

I’m writing Book 2 of the Witches of Cleopatra Hill trilogy, which will be out in early June. I’m also in the planning stages of my next Tales of the Latter Kingdoms novel.

What books did you read as a child?

Almost anything I could lay my hands on, but I especially loved L.M. Montgomery’s “Anne” books and the E. Nesbitt books, and The Chronicles of Narnia, Heinlein’s juvenile SF, Nancy Drew…and the list goes on. I usually read about three or four books a week.

Do you listen to music while you write?

Yes. I listen to movie soundtracks, especially for films I haven’t even seen or have only seen once. I make playlists for each novel and cycle through them over and over and until I’m done with the book.
