How would you introduce your books to someone that has yet to read them?
The Cursed Pack series is about werewolves. I’m having a lot of fun using classic romance tropes in a paranormal setting. Book 1, Heir To The Pack is a werewolf’s secret baby story. Book 2, Snowbound With The Pack is about werewolves stranded in a remote cabin in Montana.

I try to make my characters complex and realistic: they are far from perfect.  My books can be dark, but there’s usually a good dash of humor thrown in to balance the angst.

What inspired you to start writing?
I’ve been writing as long as I can remember! My mother was a great storyteller, and I think that had a lot to do with it.

What’s your favorite scene/line from your works?
There’s this big blond guy called Gaelan, who’s the Alpha’s second. He’s kind of the Han Solo of the series in many ways, and he gets a lot of good lines. He says things like, “Even the term ‘werewolf’ is something some potato farmer made up,” and “You know, you seem nice and all, and you’re really cute, but this question thing right here is why I’m never getting married.”

He’s going to be the hero in book 3, so there’s more in store from him!

What's the hardest thing about writing? The easiest?
The hardest thing is having to write even when the words don’t come easily.

The easiest (or perhaps the most fun) is coming up with ideas. Story ideas and characters pop into my head when I’m driving or in the shower, and then it’s a race to jot them down as soon as I can.

How has your life changed since you began writing?
I have less time to read.

Do you listen to music while you write?
No. I may be unusual in that. But I try to write anywhere and everywhere I get five minutes, so I’ll take whatever ambience is wherever I am.

Out of all of your characters, who is your favorite?
Usually the hero of whatever book I’m in the middle of working on at the time!

What do you want readers to take away from your books?
There’s often an underlying theme in my books about having to accept your true self to find real happiness. It’s not a message—the books are supposed to be entertainment first and foremost—but if that is a takeaway for some readers I’d be happy.

You’re stranded on a desert island. What books do you take with you?
I would cheat and take my Kindle because there are a lot of books I’d want to take. Authors I can read over and over again include Ilona Andrews, J.R. Ward, Anne McCaffrey, J.K. Rowling, and Dick Francis. That’s a pretty eclectic list, I know.

When she’s not writing, Laura Welling wears a lot of other hats: mother, farmer, and software engineer. She's Australian but lives in the United States on a horse farm, which she shares with her family, crazy dogs, and various horses, cats and chickens. She is a compulsive reader of all genre fiction, who started reading before the age of two, and never stopped. She wrote her first “book” when she was five—a spy story, which has since been joined in a bottom drawer by various other early attempts.
